On July 29, 2003, a 35-year-old, male master plumber died when an unshorn trench collapsed. (Source)  On November 3, 2003, a 38-year-old male construction laborer died when the unprotected 8-foot high walls of the trench he was working in collapsed. (Source)   In April 1993, a 34-year-old male, an independent contractor, died as the result of traumatic head and neck injuries during a sewer line excavation cave-in in Alaska. (Source)  Sadly, such occurences are all too common in the construction industry.  According to NIOSH, approximately 60 workers in the construction industry will die in trench cave-ins this year.

Some accidents may happen because employers and employees don't realize the dangers of working in trenches or the mechanics of a cavein. Undisturbed soil is kept in place by the horizontal and vertical forces of adjacent soil. However, soil removed to create a trench is no longer available to provide support for the soil left behind in the trench wall. With no support, soil from the trench wall will eventually move downward and inward into the excavation. This creates a serious life-threatening hazard for workers in the trench, especially taking into account the weight of soil. A cubic foot (0.3 cu.m) of soil weighs approximately 100 pounds (45 kg). A cubic yard (0.76 cu.m) of soil weighs 2,700 pounds (1,224 kg), which is about the same weight as a mid-sized automobile. Therefore, a person buried under only one metre of soil would experience enough pressure on the chest area to prevent their lungs from expanding. Suffocation would occur within about three minutes.

Trench shoring or boxing devices such as TrenchMate Shield trench shields save lives.  It is our belief that purchasing or hiring a trench shoring device is one of the best things you can do for the health and safety of your trench workers.  It is the one trench mate you really need!
